Michael Jamal woont hier nog maar een paar jaar. Nadat hij zijn bachelor had behaald aan de al Hawash Universitieit Iin Syrië, ontvluchtte hij in 2020 de verplichte militaire dienst en vroeg asiel aan in Nederland. In Groningen kwam hij al snel in contact met Ahmad, de drijvende kracht achter Bab- Ad Daar, het platform voor nieuwkomers van NITE. Inmiddels werkt hij daar al geruime tijd zelf, als productieleider, muzikant en DJ.
“Een ambassadeur zijn van MENA is here geeft me de kans om vanuit artistiek oogpunt te reflecteren op mijn persoonlijke achtergrond en de omgeving waar ik ben opgegroeid.
In MENA-regio heeft zo’n uitgebreide muzikale traditie, er zijn zoveel verschillende vormen van muziek, van klassiek tot modern, het is fantastisch dat we dat gaan laten zien. De diversiteit. Het echte verhaal, niet alleen wat we horen en zien in de media en de mainstream dingen die iedereen kent. Ik verheug me nu al heel erg op de elektronische muziek die we gaan horen. En op het NNO dat de Arabische classics speelt.”
Michael Jamal has lived here for only a few years. After earning his bachelor’s degree from Al-Hawash University in Syria, he fled mandatory military service in 2020 and applied for asylum in the Netherlands. In Groningen, he soon met Ahmad, the driving force behind Bab- Ad Daar, NITE’s platform for newcomers. He has since been working there himself for quite some time, as a production manager, musician, and DJ.
“Being an ambassador of MENA is here gives me the opportunity to reflect from an artistic point of view on my personal background and the environment where I grew up,” he said.
In MENA region has such an extensive musical tradition, there are so many different forms of music, from classical to modern, it’s great that we get to showcase that. The diversity. The real story, not the thing we hear and see in the media and the mainstream things everyone knows. I’m already looking forward to the electronic music we’re going to experience. And to the NNO playing the Arabic classics.”
