Karam Shebat (1988) is opgegroeid in Damascus, Syrië. In 2014 kwam hij als asielzoeker naar Nederland. Na in verschillende opvanglocaties te hebben gewoond, kreeg hij in 2015 een Nederlandse verblijfsvergunning en woonruimte in Groningen. In Syrië had hij al een master Bedrijfskunde behaald en het conservatorium afgerond, In Nederland doorliep hij vervolgens nog de Academie voor Popcultuur in Leeuwarden. Tegenwoordig werkt hij als cultuurcoach bij Vrijdag en als muziekdocent op een school in Emmen.
Karam is met 75.000 volgers op Instagram zoals hij zegt ‘best een beetje beroemd in het Midden-Oosten’. Als muzikant heeft hij zich in de kijker gespeeld van de Sheikh van Dubai, die hem een gouden visum heeft verschaft. Hij is niet de enige succesvolle artiest in zijn familie: zijn neef is een bekende acteur en zijn broer won Arab’s got talent met zijn danscrew. Karam zelf danst ook: In 2019 werd hij Nederlandse kampioen Salsa Cubana.
Over MENA is here: “Het is heel goed dat dit wordt georganiseerd in Groningen. De vele nieuwkomers hier hebben het nodig, ze missen hun eigen cultuur. Het betekent veel voor mij om ambassadeur te zijn van dit mooie project. Ik kan veel doen: meedenken, feedback geven, contacten leggen; ik ken heel veel goede artiesten uit de MENA-regio. En waarschijnlijk ga ik zelf ook optreden met mijn band. In de aanloop naar het festival organiseer ik samen met Nynke Stellingsma en Karin Noeken MENA Monday: vanaf maart is iedereen elke maandagmiddag welkom in de Oosterpoort, voor liveoptredens en hapjes en drankjes.”

Today he works as a culture coach at Vrijdag and as a music teacher at a school in Emmen.
With 75,000 followers on Instagram, Karam is, as he says, ‘a bit famous in the Middle East’. As a musician, he has caught the eye of the Sheikh of Dubai, who provided him with a golden residence. He is not the only successful artist in his family: his cousin is a well-known actor and his brother won Arab’s got talent with his dance crew. Karam himself also dances: In 2019, he became Dutch champion Salsa Cubana.

Being an ambassador for this beautiful project means a lot to me. I can think along, give feedback, make contacts; I know a lot of good artists from the MENA region. And I will probably perform with my band.
