Van 11 t/m 20 mei 2023 viert Groningen tijdens MENA is here de rijkheid en diversiteit van kunst en cultuur uit de MENA regio. Vier grote Groningse culturele instellingen – SPOT, NITE (Noord Nederlands Toneel + Club Guy & Roni), NNO (Noord Nederlands Orkest) en Forum – hebben de handen ineengeslagen om gezamenlijk de schoonheid van de diverse culturen te laten zien en de verschillende werelden en perspectieven samen te brengen. Inmiddels zijn ook De Wijk De Wereld, het Prins Claus Conservatorium, Groninger Kerken en de RUG aangehaakt.
Inmiddels is het programma zo goed als rond en zijn er in tien dagen meer dan 35 voorstellingen, concerten, films of andere activiteiten te zien in o.a. de Oosterpoort, de Stadsschouwburg, de Machinefabriek en het Forum. Bijzonder is dat het is gelukt om La Colline – théâtre national, het gezelschap van de wereldberoemde Libanese schrijver en theatermaker Wajdi Mouawad, naar Nederland te halen. Zijn gelauwerde voorstelling Soeurs (Zussen) is twee keer te zien in de Stadsschouwburg Groningen. Het NNO opent het stadsprogramma met een uniek concert. Mohamedou Ould Slahi (schrijver in residence bij NITE) geeft de aftrap voor het openingsconcert.
NITE neemt het publiek in Yara’s Wedding mee in hoe onze opvattingen over ‘het Oosten’ en ‘het Westen’ onze blik op de wereld bepalen. Het Forum organiseert een uitgebreid filmprogramma en een literair programma met o.a. Kader Abdolah. In De Oosterpoort is er veel ruimte voor muziek en worden er speciaal voor MENA is here het muziekfestival Colors of Mena en het electronische festival Tablatronics georganiseerd. De Wijk De Wereld organiseert samen met Babaddaar Let’s go dabke, met voorafgaand dabke workshops in de wijken. Ook is er een uitgebreid foodprogramma, met o.a. een exclusieve foodmarkt op de Nieuwe Markt. Maar er is veel meer, bekijk hier het volledige programma!
From May 11 to 20, Groningen will celebrate the richness and diversity of art and culture from the MENA region during MENA is here. Four of the major Groningen cultural institutions – SPOT, NITE (Noord Nederlands Toneel + Club Guy & Roni), NNO (The North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra) and Forum – have joined forces to highlight its cultural diversity and beauty and to bring together different worlds and perspectives. De Wijk De Wereld, the Prince Claus Conservatoire, Groningen Historic Churches Foundation and the University of Groningen have also joined in on this endeavour.
The program is now almost complete. During ten days, over 35 performances, concerts, films and other activities will take place in venues such as De Oosterpoort, the Stadsschouwburg, the Machinefabriek and the Forum. Special mention goes to La Colline – théâtre national, the company of the world-famous Lebanese writer and theatre maker Wajdi Mouawad. His acclaimed production Soeurs (Sisters) will be performed twice at the Stadsschouwburg Groningen. The NNO kicks off the city program with a unique concert, with an opening speech by Mohamedou Ould Slahi (writer in residence at NITE).
In Yara’s Wedding, NITE delves into how our ideas of ‘East’ and ‘West’ continue to shape our view of the world. The Forum organizes an extensive film and literary program with, among others, Kader Abdolah. Music reigns supreme in De Oosterpoort. The music festival Colors of Mena and the electronic festival Tablatronics have been staged especially for MENA is here. Together with Babaddaar, De Wijk De Wereld organizes Let’s go Dabke, preceded by Dabke workshops in the surrounding neighbourhoods.
