Troupe Courage

The Horse of Jenin is een ode aan de kracht van verbeelding en de waarde van spelen in vrijheid. Fysiek theater van het allerhoogste niveau, een geestige show en briljant getimed.

Internationaal spelerscollectief Troupe Courage maakt theater over de vindingrijkheid van mensen in hun strijd om te overleven. Sinds oktober staat het leven van Troupe Courage speler Alaa Shehada (Jenin, Palestina) volledig op zijn kop. Alaa is nu in Nederland en het is urgenter dan ooit dat hij zijn overlevingsverhaal vertelt.

Het paard is een Arabisch symbool voor vrijheid. Dit symbool blijft terugkomen in het leven van Alaa. In zijn woonplaats staat een metershoog standbeeld van een paard. Het vertegenwoordigt verzet en veerkracht, het is de trots van Jenin. Als een Israëlische bulldozer het standbeeld verwijdert, vraagt Alaa zich af: Waarom? Wat is er met het paard gebeurd? En heeft het toen verteld over de dag dat Alaa samen met Ahmed op het paard probeerde te rijden? Uit brokstukken van herinneringen bouwt Alaa een nieuw paard, aangevuld met een enorme dosis humor en verbeelding. Een hoopvolle solovoorstelling waarin verbeelding vrijheid betekent.

International actors’ collective Troupe Courage makes theatre about the ingenuity of people in their struggle to survive. Since October, the life of Troupe Courage player Alaa Shehada (Jenin, Palestine) has been completely turned upside down. Alaa is now in the Netherlands and it is more urgent than ever that he tells his survival story.

The horse is an Arabic symbol for freedom. This symbol keeps recurring in Alaa’s life. In his hometown there is a meter-high statue of a horse. It represents resistance and resilience, it is the pride of Jenin. When an Israeli bulldozer removes the statue, Alaa wonders: Why? What happened to the horse? And did it tell about the day that Alaa tried to ride the horse with Ahmed? Alaa builds a new horse from fragments of memories, supplemented with a huge dose of humour and imagination. A hopeful solo performance in which imagination means freedom.
