Als iemand de teksten van de beroemde middeleeuwse Perzische dichters/mystici Hafez en Rumi kan zingen, is het Mahsa Vahdat. Maar ook een hedendaagse dichter als Mohammad Ibrahim Jafari krijgt bij deze in Teheran geboren zangeres én activiste vleugels. En geloof ons: je hoeft het Perzisch niet machtig te zijn om je te laten inpakken door haar muziek.
In haar geboorteland kan Mahsa niet zonder mannelijk gezelschap het podium op, in de rest van de wereld luistert het publiek maar wat graag naar haar fenomenale zang. Of ze nu solo optreedt of in goed muzikaal gezelschap verkeerd. In 2018 was Mahsa met het Kronos Quartet te gast op het Holland Festival, een jaar later stond ze op het affiche van Welcome tot the Village. Tijdens MENA IS HERE slaat ze samen met het Alma Quartet en pianist Rembrandt Frerichs een brug tussen westerse en oosterse culturen. Mogen we het zeggen? Nou, voor één keertje dan: Mahsa is a must see!
If there is anyone who can do justice to the lyrics of the famous medieval Persian poets/mystics Hafez and Rumi, it’s Mahsa Vahdat. But the compositions of a contemporary poet such as Mohammad Ibrahim Jafari also take flight when sung by the Tehran-born singer and activist. Rest assured: you don’t have to be proficient in Persian to be swept away by her music.
In her native country, Mahsa, as a woman, is not allowed to perform on her own on a public stage for a mixed audience. In the rest of the world, audiences love to listen to her phenomenal vocals, be it solo or in company. In 2018 Mahsa was a guest at the Holland Festival with the Kronos Quartet, a year later she performed at Welcome to the Village in Leeuwarden. During MENA IS HERE she, together with the Alma Quartet and pianist Rembrandt Frerichs, bridges the gap between Western and Eastern cultures. Dare we say it? Maybe just this once: Mahsa is a must see!
