Prachtig vormgegeven film over een Iraanse vrouw een die een poging doet het leven van de legendarische Arabische zangeres Oum Kulthum in beeld te brengen.
De Iraanse Mitra is in de midden 40 en wil niet langer alleen maar een moeder en een vrouw zijn, maar ook een degelijke filmmaker. Daarom maakt ze van de gelegenheid gebruik om haar carrière in het buitenland uit te bouwen. Maar het succes dat er mogelijk inzit, heeft een hoge prijs: omdat Mitra als vrouw nu in een mannelijk bastion werkt, moet ze haar familie achterlaten en kan ze niet meer terugkeren naar haar vaderland, wat betekent dat ze ook van haar zoon moet scheiden.

Dr. Mayada Madbouly is socioloog en werkt bij de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Ze is gespecialiseerd in het maken van herinneringen en cultureel erfgoed in het Midden-Oosten en Noord-Afrika. Ze geeft les in politieke sociologie, cultuurstudies en de sociologie van internationale relaties. Voor Looking for Oum Kulthum geeft ze een korte introductie over Egyptisch cultureel erfgoed en de rol van Oum Kulthoum daarbinnen.
A beautiful film about an Iranian woman who attempts to portray the life of the legendary Arab singer Oum Kulthum.
The Iranian Mitra is in her mid-40s and no longer just wants to be a mother and a wife, but also a decent filmmaker. Therefore, she takes the opportunity to develop her career abroad. But the possible success comes at a high price: because as a woman Mitra now works in a male bastion, she has to leave her family behind and can no longer return to her homeland, which means that she must also be separated from her son.

Dr Mayada Madbouly is a sociologist, and works at the University of Groningen. She is specialized in the making of memories and cultural heritage in the Middle East and North Africa. She gives lectures on political sociology, culture studies, and sociology of international relations. For Looking for Oum Kulthum, she will give a short introduction on Egyptian heritage and the importance of Oum Kulthoum therein.
