Antikoloniaal heldenverhaal vol actie over een ondergrondse verzetsgroep in Caïro in de jaren 1920.
Caïro, 1919. Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog zijn de Egyptische soldaten van het oude rijk getraumatiseerd, heeft de Spaanse griep het land geteisterd en worden nationalistische leiders onder fel protest gedeporteerd. Iemand die immuun is voor het tumult is Abdel Qader, een apolitieke drugsdealer die de Jinn genoemd wordt en die zaken blijft doen met de kolonisator. Maar als het onrecht hem wakker schudt, voegt hij zich bij een ondergrondse verzetsgroep onder leiding van Ahmed Kira, een dokter die een streepje voor heeft bij de Britten.
Kira & El Gin, een verfilming van Ahmed Mourads beroemde roman 1919 (uit 2014), is een meeslepend, spannend en prikkelend antikoloniaal drama dat zich afspeelt tijdens de Egyptische onafhankelijkheidsstrijd in de jaren 1920. Groeide uit tot de meest succesvolle Egyptische film aller tijden.
Met inleiding
Dr. Lucia Admiraal is docent bij de afdeling Midden-Oostenstudies van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Ze is historicus en onderzoekt de culturele en intellectuele geschiedenis van het moderne Midden-Oosten. Voor Kira & El Gin geeft ze een korte introductie. Ze legt hierin de historische context van de film uit, die plaatsvindt in Egypte ten tijde van de Egyptische opstand tegen de Britten in 1919.

Action-packed anti-colonial epic about an underground resistance inut in Cairo in 1920
Cairo, 1919. The Great War has left Egyptian soldiers of the Empire traumatised, the Spanish Flu has ravaged the country and nationalist leaders are being deported amid fervent protests. Unfazed by the tumult, Abdel Qader, an apolitical drug peddler known as the Jinn, continues to do business with the colonisers. But when injustice comes knocking, he finds himself joining hands with an underground resistance unit led by Ahmed Kira, a physician in the good books of the British.
Kira & El Gin is inspired by real events, but it steers clear of mere historical illustration. The film is neither chauvinistic, nor does it glorify the exploits of the resistance fighters, who simply do what they must do. The emphasis is instead on the inner turmoil of the characters, who are all torn between a desire for family and a longing for justice.

Dr. Lucia Admiraal is a lecturer at the Department of Middle Eastern Studies of the University of Groningen (RUG) She is a historian working on the cultural and intellectual history of the modern Middle East. For Kira & El Gin, she will give a brief introduction by giving historical context of the film, which takes place during the Egyptian rise in 1919 against the British occupiers.
